Wireless connection cannot access internet after xp sp2.

I have an HP zt3000 laptop with the intel pro/wireless 2200BG adapter. I've
got a Netgear WGT624 v2 wireless router connected to my cable modem. I also
have another pc running xp sp2 connected to the router with a cable. After
installing sp2 (at least I believe that is the failure point). The wireless
connection works just fine on my side of the router. I can see the other box
on my network, transfer files, ping the router, etc. I cannot see anything
on the internet. IE says I'm not connected to the internet. pings get no
response, etc. When I attach the laptop to the router with a cable, the
internet is suddenly visible. Signal strength is excellent & I've obviously
got my wireless connection security set up OK since I can transfer files.
Can anyone give me a clue as to why I can't get to the internet via my
wireless connection, but can with a wired connection from the same laptop?

Thanks - Mitch

Get the latest drivers for your wireless card (from HP, if it's onboard?)
and install them in device manager.

I've tried both the latest hp drivers and the drivers directly from Intel.
No apparent difference. I still show great signal strength, perfect
communtications between my wireless and wired computers, and nada from the
internet using the wireless connection.

It turns out I could ping internet sites using ip addresses rather than
hostnames. So, I thought "DNS problem?". But my regular lan connection
doesn't have name resolution problems. Both connections are set up to get
DNS hosts automatically. ipconfig shows, however, that the wired connection
has 3 DNS server ips, but the wireless connection has none. I manually added
the 3 DNS server ip addresses to the wireless connection tcp/ip settings and
everything works. Are the missing DNS addresses a result of something that
xp sp2 does?

Shouldn't be. But what DNS server was your wired connection getting from
DHCP? Some consumer gateways dish out the LAN IP of the gateway itself and I
don't like that - I always specify the ISP's DNS servers in the DHCP server
properties.

Mitch,

could be, but other factors may be involved. The next thing I'd
do is update the router firmware.

Mitch i have been studying and taking many classes on wireless networking
and internet connection sharing, and most of the problems can be a result of
a spyware program or a firewall preventing you access to the internet, but
allowing you access to file sharing. Hope this information helps, if you have
