Wireless card problem

I have suddenly begun having a problem with my laptop's
wireless connection. Instead of picking up the correct
IP address from the AP point, it picks up a different
number beginning, I think, with 165...I have to disable
and then enable the card before it will pick up the
actual address assigned by the router. I don't know what
would have caused the change or how to correct it. This
had only happened a few times in the past, but now it
happens every time I start the computer. I also find the
card dropping the connection often and having to manually
reconnect, where before if the connection was lost, it
would reconnect automatically. Does anyone know what
would cause this? Thank you.

Does your router is set as a DHCP server
If it is and if your portable IP configuration is ste to use DHCP, when your laptop will start it will try to get IP idress from DHCP server (your router), if it fails, windows give to your adapter the automatic tempory IP adrees in the rang of 169.254.x.y with the mask of 255.255.255.

Is this what happen in your case ?

A neighbor may have recently installed a wireless network near you.

There are several Microsoft KB articles on this kind of issue. Just browse through them and I think you'll find a cure.
