WinXPpro firewall prevents local access

H

Howard Sartori

I lost access (I can't see the drives) to the WinXP Pro PC from my NT4.0 PC
when I turned on the WinXP Pro PC firewall.
What happened. Or, what do I have to add. Any ideas?
Thanks/Howard

Well, basically, what you are seeing is what the firewall
is supposed to do. If you were to make MS networking
ports allowed to go through the firewall you would be
removing one of the major benefits of the firewall.
The XP firewall does not support access based on an
authenticated identity. If you open the network sharing
ports you would be opening these for all takers.

One common alternative is to use IIS on the Pro, and
allow port 80 inbound in the firewall config. One then
configures IIS to only allow authenticated access using
MS authentication (no clear text), and share what is needed
with webs .

WinXP's built-in firewall, in particular, is not designed to be
used on internal LAN connections. The _only_ connection on which you
should have ICF enabled is the direct connection to the Internet.
