Winxp won't install, please help.

hi,

I can't seem to upgrade to win xp home edition. I bought the win xp home
upgrade disk at best buy last week. I'm running win me now. my
motherboard is a soyo 6ba+III. cpu is PIII 550E. 192 mb ram. video card
is a voodoo 3000 agp. My hard drive is connected to the motherboard
through a Promise 100 ultra TX2. I ran the upgrade adviser and it showed
no hardware issues, the only software issue was a mpeg layer3 program,
which I can't seem to uninstall.

This is what happens. Everything goes well until it comes time to start
the install process. It finishes the preparing to install fine, then it
copies the files just fine. Then it reboots, like it should. the computer
posts, then I go to the screen where I choose 1 or 2. I choose 1 and then
it goes to a black screen with a very dim windows logo. It just stays
there, no error messages, no hd activity. nada.

This is what I tried. updated motherboard bios, updated promise
controller card bios, updated promise card drivers, tried a clean boot
using msconfig. I tried booting from the xp cd, it hung at a blue screen
instead.

Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks

I had the exact same problem. I pulled the video card and replaced it with a
lower end card. Try that...I'd suggest avoiding a Voodoo or Creative card.
Use something that is more current. When I did that, I didn't have a single
problem booting up afterwards. Most likely a major driver conflict. (note, my
problem occured AFTER Win was fully loaded and running).

I assume since you used the upgrade advisor that you are also entering the
upgrade installation from the XP splash screen while running ME and not
booting the computer with the cd.

What do you mean by "choose 1 or 2"? What are you choosing between?

yes I'm running the upgrade from windows. During the installation after
the setup analyzes my computer and copies installation files, it then
reboots. After the computer posts but before windows starts your
presented with a screen with 2 options. 1) setup(or maybe its install)
windows xp 2) exit windows xp setup.

It may be a BIOS setting. Have you emailed the issue to Soyo? I realize
that this is a long discontinued mobo, but it is worth trying. The Layer3
program should not be an issue as long as it is not running. I suspect that
the Upgrade Advisor is only warning you that it may not function correctly
under XP and that you should seek an update.
