WinXP, Win98 and IR networking

Is it not possible to network XP<-->98 thru an IR port???

I have a parallel cable to cable config working, but I couldn't get
the IR to even start on the XP system. It said it was waiting (host)
but would not respond to the 98 system (guest)

I think I have had the IR working to another XP system and it appears
to be setup, but there is no fast IR protocol to configure.
 
Make sure the communications mode in the BIOS Setup for
both IR ports matches.
eg. Full vs. Half duplex, etc.
