WINXP will NOT BOOT UP!

Help! My new Gateway pc will not boot up. I've had it for
4 months with absolutely NO problems. I've recently added
NO new software or hardware and it was virus free. (run
Norton) Prior to my crash, I did a disk cleanup and
defrag - rebooted and got the following error message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not
start successfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted
unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect
your files and folders, choose Last Known Good
Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that
worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a
power failure or because the Power or Reset button was
pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem,
choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings
that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to
your choice. Seconds until Windows starts: 30 "

I've tried all of the above options, but was returned to
the same screen with the above error message.
It was suggested that I run Windows Repair - and I did.
However, towards the end of the repair installation ,right
after "Please wait while Setup initializes..." everything
went wrong. I got the following error message:

SETUP CANNOT SET THE REQUIRED WINXP CONFIGURATION
INFORMATION.. THIS INDICATES AN INTERNAL SETUP ERROR.

CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.

Can anyone please tell me what's going on ? I contacted
Gateway and they weren't much help! All they say is to
reinstall Windows, but that's not possible! It won't work.
Again, NO new software of hardware was added to this pc
prior to the crash - which makes this all baffling to me!

Any help on this would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

What did you use for the disk clean up, was it XP's applet or a utility from
some other application. It sounds as though you might have deleted
something required by your system.

From the message you are getting, it appears the system is too corrupt for
the repair install and would require a clean install to a freshly formatted
hard drive. Before pursuing that, I think you should contact Gateway again.
The system is still under warranty and because the disk you have was
supplied by Gateway, it may have tools, functions or utilities as well as
routines we don't know about. Explain to them what happened, if nothing
else, they can talk you through a clean install if necessary.

This is their responsibility, it is in their license agreement with you.
