WinXP SP3 ISO Download

Just to confuse us the FAQ is about installing SP2!

Others have pointed out that I did not make it clear that the ISO
image is the SP3 Installer for SP3 only. Sorry.

It is just that this method, of downloading the ISO and burning to a
CD, is a safer (and IMHO better) way to install SP3. The Win Update
download, when you run the file, unpacks to your hard drive then
installs SP3. The SP3 Install CD you make with the ISO image does not
unpack files, just copies the files from the CD.

Also gives you a way to reinstall SP3 if you have to rebuild you
system (full install of WinXP SP2 from Setup CD, then install SP3). It
is this scenario that having a SP3 Install CD really has an advantage,
after completing this full install (SP2 + SP3) you will have much less
Win Updates to install.

As to exactly what SP3 includes, Microsoft has a whitepaper on SP3 you
can download from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&DisplayLang=en

But here's a quote from that whitepaper:

"Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released Windows XP updates,
including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band
releases. For example, the service pack includes functionality
previously released as updates, such as the Microsoft® Management
Console (MMC) 3.0 and the Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0 (MSXML6)."

"Microsoft is not adding significant functionality from newer versions
of Windows, such as Windows Vista, to Windows XP through XP SP3. For
instance, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7,
although Windows XP SP3 does include updates to both Internet Explorer
6 and Internet Explorer 7, and it will update whichever version is
installed on the computer. One notable exception is that, SP3 does
include Network Access Protection (NAP) to help organizations that use
Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the Windows Server®
2008 operating system."

Thanks! Yeah, Big Al, I got ISO from MS download site. Although it
should contain "Autorun" I get "Error: Auiorun program not found."
Burned it with Ubuntu's built in Disk Creator and burned it ultra
slow.
FYI the program you suggest does not appear to be compatible with my
OS.
Further advice most welcome.

Of course, it is fine to snip the parts of the post that are irrelevant.

Sometimes downloads get corrupted. The MD5 hash of this file:

xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso

should be:

308245853e5b231343ee17b36ffda1e6

Is that your MD5 hash as well? If not, download it again. I got mine
from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/...CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E&displaylang=en

(watch the wrap)

Latest update: The burner you recommended doesn't seem compatible with
my OS so I dwnlded & burned the prescribed ISO with the highly
recommended KB3. Same Error: Autorun not found. So I dug out the old
XPSP2 disc that came with my Dell, it booted! But this time I got an
error telling me that my XP install was incompatible with the NTFS
partition created with GParted (about 34GB).Please bring your holy water

I'm reading your message above and you say "the old XPSP2 disc... it
booted!" But the iso you download (or I suggested) is not bootable.
Autorun is there only so when you insert the cd while XP is running,
there is something to autorun on cd insertion. Even if that does not,
you can simply run the WINDOWSXP-KB936929-SP3-X86-ENU.exe file in the
root folder.

And I just downloaded the SP3 iso from MS and burned a CDRW and it
autoruns right into the SP3 load screen with a "continue->" box to start
the install.
I used Nero.

Regarding "... NTFS partition created with GParted (about 34GB ...." -
GParted is a Linux partitioning utility - it's version of NTFS is NTFSprog.

Are you trying to install using the .iso? If so, that won't work. You
need a burner that will pull the files out of the .iso and create the
full set of files. ISO is like a zip file compression; the files need
to be unzipped out of the iso file in order to be run. I'm pretty sure
Nero can pull the files from an iso image and burn them to a disk.
