WinXP SP2 won't install since Oct Security Updates??

Hi,
I am not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but when deploying Win XP
SP2 to our corporate PC's it seems to be failing at the "Performing Cleanup"
stage. So I have determined that this is only affecting PC's that have the
Windows Security updates released in October (MS06-057. MS06-061, MS06-063,
MS06-064 & MS06-065 to be specific).
I am trying to determine if it is a specific patch that is causing the
problem or a combination of a couple.
Seems strange that no-one else seems to have reported this, would have
thought that it is just me but I am starting to see this issue on a number of
PC's now, and by removing the security updates SP2 will install.

Any thoughts?

GT,

Check these logs out for possible clues as to why SP will not install

%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

If there is an "Access Denied" error than it's related to registry
Permissions. I'd be interested in knowing if one or a combination of the
updates you specified has altered reg Perms and is preventing SP2 from
installing.
Could you perhaps install them one at a time and see if just one is
causing the issue ?

I"m not an MVP, but I had a similar problem with certain updates not
installing. I contacted MS from the update site as support for security
issues is free. Our issue had something to do with the administrator
permission or something. It actually took a few trys and my case got
upgraded to a higher level or something, but they got it fixed.

Hope it helps.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.I have tried installing the updates seperatly i.e.
only having one of the new updates installed and it fails regardless of which
one is installed.
I am logging in with a domian admin account so permissions shouldn't be an
issue.
I have referred to the svcpack.log file and the last actions that are taking
place are the migrations of existing hotfixes (we also have restore points
disabled which shouldn't prevent any errors with this).

The setupapi.log will contain useful info, too. Don't overlook it.
(we also have restore points disabled which shouldn't prevent any errors with this).

Explain the above, please. SR must be enabled for SP2 to install.

Hi,

I have re-run the setup and had a look at the setupapi.log file, I couldn't
see anything helpful in here as the last entry was a few minutes before the
install failed and did not seem relevant.

With regards to the restore points, I have read else that during the SP2
install it creates restore points for the hotfixes as it moves them, and we
have restore points disabled by default - but this does no affect the
software install.

GT

The only way restore points can be disabled is to disable System
Restore. If there's another way, please inform me.
Check the Svcpack.log, or, read the "Service Pack 2 installation log
files" section here -
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2
and then enable versbose logging for more information on why SP2 will
not install on the affected systems.
