Went by the book but when it upgraded XP from SP1 to SP2 all I get is a blank
desktop, no taskbar and an error window.
Error reads:

Explorer.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point SHCreate ThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic
link library SHLWAPI.dll

Any ideas or help how to fix this so I can successfully install SP2 ???

You receive an error message when you try to
install Windows XP updates from the Windows

Same problem here 2 days ago. I downloaded a security upgrade and got the
same exact error message and blank screens. I have tried several things to
fix it, but no luck so far. If you hear anything useful, please let me know.
I really dont want to format!!! Thanks.

So far the best and easiest solution as far as I can tell is to press Ctl-Alt-Del and
choose New Task > type cmd.exe to get a DOS prompt and go to: X:\Windows\system32
and rename (in my case) SHLWAPI.dll to SHLWAPI.dll.old and reboot to eliminate the
offending file. I have yet to actually try this since it was such a bad experience I
turned OFF my Windows Updater.

I tried that, as well as a couple other files that were suggested. Nothing
worked. i am getting fairly frustrated at this thing. I know it is the
security update that jammed up my system, but I cannot figure out how to get
rid of it from the command prompt. Also, do you know how hot restore an older
registry backup (say from a week ago) from the command prompt window ?? Or at
least see a list of the backups with the associated dates.

Supposedly you're suppose to be able to restore from the command prompt by going
to: C:\WINDOWS\Systen32\backup\rstui.exe or something like that. It's
suppose to bring up the System Restore window. Hope this helps a bit.

I had the same problem as all the others, I tried the fixes that wa
suggested and nothing happened. Did anybody fix thier problem, if s
how, or do I need to reformat and reinstall WINDOWS XP. Don't want t
but might have to.

Thanks
