After installing Service pack 2 on my eMachine laptop and performing the
required reboot my laptop would not restart. Not even in any form of safe
mode. I did a restore using the supplied restore disk and I was back in
business - until I installed SP2 again. The Same thing happened again. My
inclination is to not reinstall SP2 but I want to eliminate any security
problems and problems running 3rd party software. Any advise?

Before you install SP2, make sure your computer is completely free of
malwares.Run run spyware and adware removal programs before installing SP2.

After restoring I installed my virus software and anti-spam/adware software
and ran them. Nothing was found. Then I downloaded SP2. Do I need to run
some other anti-"maleware" software?

First try the download version of SP2 (don't use Windows Update site)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en
or download from: http://tinyurl.com/7xthn (points to the same Microsoft
web page)

Then run an AV check in safe mode.
After you have run the Anti-Virus/Spyware check (in safe mode) and assuming
it passes.
Disconnect your PC from the Internet, reboot and logon as you normally do
and then turn off all your AV software programs.
Next double click on the SP2 file you downloaded and install.

Hello,
Do a full backup of your system, run file and settings transfer wizard, and
do a clean install using a Windows SP2 CD. Be sure you have the all the
drivers that your system might need BEFORE installing it (drivers CD that
come with your laptop or visit the web site for the latest drivers). Restore
your settings (from FSTW) and your data.
Regards,
