WinXP slowing down .... almost freezing

G

Gillies

Greetings XP gurus,

Using WinXP SP2 on a P4 3.2mghz, I am experiencing tremendous system
slowdown when I want to open a data file from any applications including
Word ou Excel or any applications data that needs to open a data file. As I
see the tree to navigate to the path of the file, everything becomes sooooo
slow for 3-4 minutes (almost freezing the puter) then everything is back up
and running again. I have no CD in the cdrom.

What causes this annoying slowdown and how to fix it ?

Thanks

Gillies

Hi Gillies,

Usually this behavior is attributable to spyware. Programs that can help,
both have free versions available for the home user:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

you might want to thoroughly scan the system to eliminate any spyware
and viruses which can really slow down the system. Next take a look at
the HD- see if its full or therez lots of junk, run a disk cleanup or
CCleaner and then check the disk for errors and defragment. Do this
regularly. If you havent cleaned it or its badly fragged, applications
could respond slow. What about RAM? Adding more RAM if ur running
memory intensive programs may help. Also see whats running at startup,
if there are too many items, uncheck whatever isnt essential.
