WinXP Pro wrong path????

F

Frank Pulsucki Jr

I am trying to troubleshoot an WinXP Pro install that was working 1.5 years
fine and is now having trouble. I tried to install a program in
compatibility mode and it crashed but in the process my box is now running
slow to right click. I am dual booting to Win98 and I tried to run msconfig
from the run box in XP and it gives me errors but if I run it from the
D:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries folder msconfig it runs as expected.
If I manually go to my C:\win98\system of course it gives the exact same
errors so I think my path may be screwed up in WINXP. Anyone know how to
fix this problem????

What is the error message, Frank? In the meantime.....

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI file. This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

This file can be opened in Notepad. A typical BOOT.INI file looks like
this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

One specific issue that was noted was multiple "operating systems" sections.
Will be listed like (#2, #3.....) under [operating systems] entries.

If this is not the case for you, nor does apply:

To extract a new copy:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.

You can also opt to checking your settings here:

Check the app path here: Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

In the right pane under Data it should read:
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe
/top10faqs.htm

The error when trying to run msconfig from the run command in winxp, it
gives a warning cannot read config.sys file because of an error (cannot find
path??) and same with autoexec.bat, system.ini, win.ini and then gives error
procedure entry point getprocessflags could not be located in dynamic link
library kernel32.dll I looked at my boot.ini file it appears like you
stated other than my winxp pro install is on d: instead of c:. I also went
to the registry where you told me and that is pointing to the correct
file!!! If I type the complete path into the run box it runs fine!!! What
am I missing?? Is it possible Winxp is stuck in compatibility mode from
when I tried to install that program?? As I stated it started when I right
clicked on the install file and selected compatibility with 98/me and tried
to install then it did install then it crashed (locked up). I tried system
restore back 1 week and it did not help this problem!

Hi Frank,

This really sounds as though you have mismatched versions of msconfig
running here. Have you tried to export a new/fresh copy as I suggested?

I did do the extracting of the file changing the reference of cd and winxp
drives and it did copy it fine (after I deleted the first one, it copied a
changed version back to pre service pack 1 (was something with1106 at the
end for version)) and as I stated it will run fine if I drill down to the
correct folder and double click on it all is well. If I type in msconfig in
the run window it seems to go to the windows 98 install msconfig as it even
looks somewhat different! Somehow something has changed and I believe it is
confusing the two installations! Would a reinstall help get it back on
track???
Thanks Frank

I tried something and renamed the win98 version in the win98/system foler to
another name and the msconfig works as expected! Why is it looking into
win98 folder???

Hi Frank,

I don't remember if you had already stated this but which drive letter is XP
installed on? Also, after you renamed it in Win98, does it still work
properly there?

F

Frank Pulsucki Jr

C: is my win 98 install, D: is my Winxp pro install. When I renamed
msconfig to msconfig98.exe in the C:\windows\system folder it did not work
in Windows 98 (unless I double clicked on it ) but it then worked in Win XP
Pro ok. Could it be possible that the two installs are getting tie
together?? How could this happen? My real problem I am having is when I
right click on a folder it will take about 3-4 minutes for the menu to pop
up but if I also have another drive open and right click on a folder there
the menu comes right up with no delay! I do not seem to have any other
issues that I am aware. Would a reinstall of Winxp fix these problems and
what would be the best way to keep my dual boot as it is now? Thanks for
you help, it just is annoying to have the very long delay on right click
menus for simple things such as cut and paste!

That is what I suspected and have to seriously question the why in your
particular situation as the %systemroot% etc's should recognize and function
properly even though XP is not installed on C.

As for the right click issue, that can be tied to many things. These
hotfixes have been tied to the issue, however for one of them, it depends
how current you have been as it has been updated: 817287, 821557

Suggestions:

Right click a blank area on the Desktop/Properties/Appearance
/Effects. In the Effects dialog box, click to clear the: "Use the following
Transition effect for menus and tooltips check box, and ok your way out.

And/or: Click the folder or file that you want (select it) before you
right-click it to display the shortcut menu.

Right Click Crash

This is also common behavior if Hotbar is installed. If this is the case,
run the edit listed below:

Hotbar - Windows Explorer/New/Folder Freezes (Line 206)

I tried the echo %path% at ms-dos window within xp and at the end of the
listing it lists c:\windows; c:\window\system; c:\windows\command Why is
it even listing my win98 install?? My winxp pro install is on d: drive
(separate drive)? Any solutions or insight?? How can I change this?? The
other items I tried (although I do not have hot bar) and did not solve!
