WinXP printer drivers for older printers

System Hdwr: IBM 8183-21U System Sfwr: WinXP-Pro

For nearly 18 months, I've used above machine with

* C-Itoh 8510 dot matrix printer (Apple ImageWriter II) to print checks
* HP Desk Jet 550C to print those schematics requiring color.
* HP LaserJet 1000 Series to print B&W text and graphics. (Now OK)

Earlier this week machine totally, but totally crashed because I
accidently acquired computer virus and worm. I formated HDD and
reloaded operating system from IBM's recovery partition. It completely
reinstalled the operating system.

My notes from Dec.'03 indicate that previously I installed these
printers by merely going to the "INSTALL PRINTERS" and selecting the
printers from the list. I was able to reinstall the HP LaserJet 1000
without problem. When seeking to install the others, it can no longer
find the printer drivers. It insists on printer driver files with the
suffix .inf .

My prime concern is to find a printer driver that will work with the
C-Itoh, so I can print bank checks on fan-folded tractor-feed sheets.
The C-Itoh will work with most any text or generic text printer driver.
A search of DriverGuide.com yields a file called Citoh.exe which
includes the file citoh.inf, but it does not work. The machine seems to
insist on associating it with LPT1 rather than Serial Port 2. Result is
machine lock up.

I'm confident I'll eventually find a driver for the HP DJ 550C, but any
suggestions will be welcomed. The real priority is the dot matrix printer.

Could some MicoSoft Update (SR-2) to WinXP be the problem? As I said at
the beginning, these printers worked before under WinXP. Ideas would
be appreciated.

Additional Notes to prior post on HP DJ 550C

The HP site
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...005&lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&dlc=en&printable=yes&

says "the drivers for HP Deskjet printers are included in Windows XP"

For certain the HP DJ 550 C is listed when I go to the Printer Install,
but the machine doesn't find it. I also have a WinXP-Pro CD that was
used to install WinXP on another machine. The IBM cannot find the
appropriate driver on that CD as well.

My thought is that if I can figure out how to get machine to find HP DJ
550C driver, it may also find the Generic Text Driver for the C-Itoh
printer.

Install printer / Manufacturer: Generic / Text Only

The C-Itoh is connected to serial port Cannon "D" connector with RS232
cable thru polarity inverting cable. My notes indicate I was using Com 2.

The HP DeskJet 550C is connected to the parallel port.

The HP LaserJet 1000 is connected to the USB port.

I have NOT changed the connections. The only thing that has changed is
the software.

Since original post, I note that Norton Ghost disc claims it has lots of
printer drivers on it. I need to check it out.

If I go to install printer / Generic / Text Only and click on "windows
update," it says that the driver is not available.

PROBLEM SOLVED - I formated C:\ and reinstalled the whole operating
system from originals. Before allowing computer to go on the internet
for updates, I sought to install the printers. They installed just
fine. I didn't need any mfg CD's except for the HP LJ 1000 which was
probably designed after my version of WinXP. \

Lesson to be learn... Provide for back ups and use them.
