I have just set up 2 computers through a hub with a cable connection to the
hub. I can ping both computers using ip addresses.but when I try pinging
using the computer name it times out. I can ping the computer I am pinging
from with the name. So bottom line is I am not able to see or share files
from one to the other. All systems seem to be working correctly.
Thanks

From a previous post:
"Generally speaking if you can access a computer by IP address and not by
name -Domain Name Svc (DNS) is not available. If by name but not IP - most
common cause is TCP/IP not configured to obtain IP address automatically."

Dump the hub and get a router. Given this description I'd suspect both PCs
are connecting directly to the ISP, getting an IP address from the ISP, and
are totally exposed to the rest of the world. A router will almost surely
solve the problem and definitely will provide enhanced security over your
current configuration.

In a workgroup, Windows XP uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP, not DNS, to
resolve computer names. Using DNS for name resolution requires a
domain and a computer running a server operating system.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Advanced.
6. Click WINS.
7. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

For my two bits, I just want to jump in here and say I agree with dumping
the Hub. I have just gone thru the Network thing ! and I used a Linksys
Router and the Ethernet Cards. The instuctions that came with it made it very
simple, in fact it almost did the job itself...
I found the toughest part was the "File & Folder sharing" in itself it's a
little complicated and you have to pay attention to what's happening.
I just completed the Network today and I have a post here see ( Missing Icon
) hope it helps someone...
