WINXP, Netgear PCMCIA wireless card MA 401 and Router Netgear MR314? Hoe set it up?

I have Comcast.net cable connection. Windows XP.
Netgear PCMCIA Model card MA401, 802.11b and
Wireless cable/DSL Netgear Router MR314.

I have no instructions anywhere how to set this up between the desktop with
windows XP and the Toshiba notebook, also with windows XP.

Where can I get a procedure or write-up how to set it all up?

Or does any of you have this hardware amnd knows how to proceed? I would be
most appreciative for assistance.

To set up the router properly, type 192.168.0.1 into your browser Address
panel to access the router configuration.
Also make sure you set up a User Login on your notebook.

I am not a computer newbie, but very much when it comes to Wireless.

HOW do I even get to the Router where I can type in what you suggest?

Open Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you use), overtype those numbers
into the Address Panel (where it displays the URL address - "http: --"
whatever), hit Go & it will open the Netgear Setup menu.

Hi, when I type in the numbers you gave me, it comes up with the window for
user name and password.

I typed in the password I use for having set up Comcast and the PW I
selected there, but it comes back with the PW blank.

I also saw another page come up that say:

"The object of the MR314is protected"

I am lost at this point how to proceed.

The initial factory default Web Manager password is ‘1234’ and the user name
is “admin”.
if this has been changed you will have to reset the router thus:
Using the Default Reset button

To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the
Manager password or IP

address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the
router.

1. Press the Default Reset button for 10 seconds, then release it.

If the TEST LED begins to blink, the defaults have been restored and the
router will now reboot. Otherwise, go to step 2.

2. Disconnect the power from the router.

3. While depressing the Default Reset button, reconnect power to the router.

Continue to hold the Default Reset button. The TEST LED will begin to blink,
then will flicker very quickly after about 10 or 15 seconds. This indicates
that the defaults have been restored and the router is now rebooting.

4. Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

I followed your advice with the re-set button and I can now connect to the
web and e-mail via the Netgear router and the desktop.

I cannot connect to either yet with the Laptop and the Netgear card,even
though it says in the bottom tray of the laptop that the wireless connection
is OK and signal strength Excellent.

Now what should I see in the Desktop? I see only local Lan connections.

Initially I would download the manuals from then website

and have a look at the relevant sections

you should have DHCP enabled on your laptop, to check

Go to My Network places on laptop, R click, properties, R click on the
wireless network connection, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click
properties. Ensure that "obtain IP address automatically" and obtain "DNS
server automatically are checked".

Reboot and see if you can now access the router from laptop, if not proceed
to next steps

Click on the wireless networks tab (next to the general tab of the window
that just opened)

Ensure "Use windows to configure my wireless network settings" is checked
Click on advanced, ensure "any available network is checked" and
"automatically connect to non-preferred networks" is checked. Close off
Wireless connection proeprties window"

Go back to My network connections window, click on advanced, "network
identification" check that your laptop name is unique and the workgroup name
is a member of the same workgroup as the desktop.

Reboot and see if you can now access the router from laptop

David, great advice!

I can now access the Web and E-mail both from the desktop with the Router
connected and the laptop with the Netgear card.

Now let me ask you another question:

Is it possible to see on the laptop the folders in Outlook Express which I
have on the desktop?

Or for that matter, documents which I have in the desktop computer? Can I
see them somehow wirelessly on the laptop?

What do I need to do for that?
