On a number of websites, I note that WinXP has apparently memorized items
like my name, email address, phone number, and logins. But it's also
memorized some earlier misspellings.

Is there, and if so where is a file which contains these items?

Is it editable?

Meh... The simple way?

Start
Run
"regedit"
Enter or click OK
Use the find function
Type in one of the misspelled names
Let it search for it
That will show you the location. :)

You can delete that one item by right clicking on that one item and
selecting delete.

For some of them you can simply highlight them with the up/down arrow keys
and press the delete button. (This is still while you're in the application,
not in the registry editor.)

"In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason
backwards. That is a very useful accomplishment, and a
very easy one, but people do not practise it much. In the every-day affairs
of life it is more useful to reason forwards, and so
the other comes to be neglected. There are fifty who can reason
synthetically for one who can reason analytically." - Sherlock

First, it's not WinXP, but your browser that does the memorizing. And
it's called "autocompletion".

When the autocomplete list opens, use the up/down keys to select an
unwanted entry, and press [Delete] (or [Shift+Delete], depending on your
browser). The entry should disappear.

The location where autocomplete entries are stored depends on the
browser you use.
