How to globally change and make WinXP memorize view settings?

My WinXP starts to annoy me in that it suddenly always opens folders in
list view. However, I prefer to have the "Icons"-view (except for a few
special folders, which I prefer to see in "Details"-mode). I have
enabled the "Remember each folder's view settings" in Tools => Folder
Options => View tab but apparently XP is ignoring this configuration.
Folders are ALWAYS opened in List view.

How/where does one globaly change these settings? And how can one force
XP to do what it claims to do, namely to indeed memorize each folders
settings and not revert them back to some strange default each time?

to all folders" etc. ...I have Remeber each filders view settings ticked
....never works !

I may be not seeing the forest because of too many trees, but while I
found several useful hints I didn't find any re. the view settings.
The nr. 17 you mentioned seems to be related to thumbnail views, i.e.
something rather different.

Agreed. I was hoping that fixing the views would fix the ability to
remember your preferences. There's no reason for it to work though..
