Hi!

My bf cannot get past the winxp logo screen before his compute
freezes. He shut it down and then tried the f8 at start up, but whe
he went into the safe mode, soon as it reached the logo it froze again
Secondly, when he placed his windows cd in the disc drive, nothin
happened. It was as if the drive was not recognized. Thirdly, h
keeps getting the message ACPIEC.SYS "corrupt file". Is there any hel
with this at all?

Thanks!

Boot to the BIOS and set the CD drive as the first drive with which to
boot from. Try pressing DEL or F2 at first boot when you see the
manufacturers logo or the POST (memory check and drive detection screen).
If that fails check the machine manufacturers support site or documents
that came with the machine for info on entering Setup (BIOS).

Now the question is: What type of disk is he using? If it's a OEM
Restore disk it will format the hard drive and reinstall the system back to
when it left the factory. All non-included apps installed afterwards will
have to be re-installed, all MS critical updates will have to be
re-installed and any changes he made for user preference will have to be
reconfigured.

If it's a Retail disk he could run a Repair install which leaves all
apps/filesdata on the hard drive with the exception of MS critical updates.
Either way any important data that he doesn't want to lose should be backed
up.
He could also boot to the Recovery Console and run CHKDSK or attempt to
copy the file back.
