WinXP License Number

J

John O'Boyle

I have an enterprise version of Win XP Pro. We've just acquired a new
laptop in our office on which Win XP Pro is already installed. I'd like
to be able to transfer our license number, which I believe is the code
of the original CD, to the new system. I'd like to be able to do this
with minimal effect on the installed version of Win XP Pro.

Is there a way I can simply enter the license number into the registry?
Or can I just put the original CD into the system and run a Win XP
repair installation?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Windows XP Enterprise Pro is a volume license version. You will need to read the
documentation on your CAL's and\or get in touch with your Company's IT person or
call MS or your reseller for further info to verify that you have enough CAL's left
to be able to install it under the Volume License

No such animal. There is no "enterprise" version of Windows XP
Professional. Perhaps you meant that your company has a volume license
for the product. So do you actually have an unused license (or "seat")
for your volume license?
We've just acquired a new
laptop in our office on which Win XP Pro is already installed.

Which means what regarding the Windows XP Profession "already installed"
on the laptop? Is it an OEM version? Be careful what you install on
that laptop since the only recovery available may be in a hidden
partition on the hard disk which will restore to the version of Windows
XP Pro that came with the laptop (and will wipe out whatever is the
"other" version of Windows XP Pro).

So are you asking about how to setup a multi-boot system to load
different operating systems at boot time?
Is there a way I can simply enter the license number into the registry?
Or can I just put the original CD into the system and run a Win XP
repair installation?

Since the "enterprise" version of Windows XP Pro is a volume license
from your company, it is time you discuss your intended actions with
your IT folks there.

Why would you want or need to do this? If you mean you have a volume
license to run XP Pro, why waste it on a machine that already has a
license to run the same OS?!

I think this is what the OP was talking about. Some call it XP
Enterprise
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/products/weenterprise/default.mspx

From that page:

"Embedded Enterprise OSes include kiosks, ATM systems, POS devices,
complex industrial automation controllers, and complex medical devices."

I doubt that's what OP is talking about! He wants to use his
"Enterprise" Product Key on a newly acquired laptop. Perhaps he should
ask Mr. Sulu. ;-)
