winxp keeps restarting (goes in loop). just recently upgraded to sp2 from sp1
but didn't have problem until today.
it's a laptop acer travelmate 2500.
Bring up the Windows XP Startup menu by tapping the F8 rapidly during
the initial startup. Start tapping just as soon as the first
information of any kind shows on the screen and keep it up until the
Windows Startup Menu appears.
If the Windows XP Startup screen displays then you missed it and need
to try again.
From the Startup Menu choose Safe Mode. If it starts okay in Safe
Mode then you need to use System Restore to set the machine back to
the most recent restore point that is prior to the onset of the
problem (e.g. yesterday morning). If the problem recurs then try the
next previous restore point. Do not do this more than 2 or 3 times
as there is something more seriously amiss if this does not resolve
it.
If that does not resolve the problem then try bringing up the startup
menu again and this time choose "Last known good configuration".
If the machine will not boot using either Safe Mode or Last Known Good
Configuration then look on the Startup Menu for an item that will
"turn off automatic restart on system failure" and choose that option.
That should put an end to the restarts. However they will most likely
be replaced by a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message and the
system will lock up. If that happens then the contents of the STOP
error, including all 4 parameters plus any file names, etc., will be a
direct clue as to the underlying cause of your problem. Post the STOP
error information back here for further assistance.
Good luck
