WinXP ignores replaced system file?

Sure hope there some gurus out there...WinXP Pro wSP2

I basically have one system file keeping me from booting. The file is
not a MS file, its a MSI(MB) IDE file that I changed experimenting
w/somehing. After I changed it from a .sys file to a .BAK file the
computer wouldn't boot and gave me the message about the missing .sys
file.

No problem. I go into Recov Console and try to rename back (C prompt
is all thats available to me). WinXP would not let me ( access denied
I think) So I copied the file from another dir where I keep the
drivers into Windows/system32/drivers dir where it oringinally was and
still no boot!!!

The file is there but winxp ignores it? Something else is happening
here. Anyone know?

Tools avaiable to me:

Recov Console - but all I can do is get to a C prompt, there is no
other repair available.

-I do have another HD w/Winxp on it to boot from & I can see the
nonbooting HD just fine

Its probably the ide driver from your mobo manu, MSI.
It 'may be' an attribute setting that is preventing you from renaming
I recollect typing help at the prompt will give a list of commands available
in recovery mode
