WinXP Home -cannot install SP2

After a clear out in solving Universa.exe downloader trojan, I had to
re-install updates, SP" gets part way through install and packs up..then
proceeds to undo the partial install.
I have followed some posts here and re-started dll like this regsvr32
Wintrust.dll
as advised to a similar problem. It did not work.
Anybody any clues as to how...short of a complete format and re-install..I
can sort this out?
