How do I Remove Latest Updates and reinstall SP2

Hi,

I had a problem with the installation of a new network printer
(TCP/IP) into XP SP2 (and Vista ... I have a dual boot system) which
I have now resolved with help from a different newsgroup. (FYI,
basically the printer's install CD and the download files were forever
giving an "Access Denied" error (even as Admin user) ). Another user
pointed me to another site for the drivers for Vista (which is what I
was wanting). After installing these into Vista I tried it on my XP
and, remarkably, it installed. No problems!! Maybe I should have
looked for different drivers before hacking and blaming the XP OS !!

Unfortunately (for me) along the way I was removing things that I
thought could have been causing the problem, with the intent of
putting them back after the printer was installed, using Auto Updates.

All the .NET 1.1 and 2.0 stuff had been removed. I then did an
install repair of the existing XP OS (SP1 version) and can now no
longer complete an update to SP2 without errors. The first attempt at
installing SP2 gave me a "Setup Error" "Access Denied"....
"installation did not complete. Select OK to undo changes". I then
let it roll back. The next attempt at the same thing I got "XP
partially updated .... may not work properly". At least OE and
Thunderbird still works :)

At present it looks like I have an XP SP 1.5 installed ;-)
(Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 (Service Pack 1)

I have been thinking of deleting some of the auto update folders in
the Windows folder (and/or updates from Add/Remove Programs) but am
not sure as to which ones I should remove. Or even if that is such a
good idea.

Reformating and reinstalling is NOT an option.

Any hints or KB links would be appreciated. TIA

Thank you for those links Rey. MOST VALUABLE (and now bookmarked).

FYI the first link (shown below) had an entry by Travis Leedahl which
basically showed how to change permissions on the HKCR hive in the
registry. I did that and was then able to install SP2 and .NET 1.1.
However .NET 2.0 still has problems.

Then the saga of it all came flooding back to me. Last year I did
have a beta version of VS2005 on my system which I deleted (before the
KB came out of course). Now I can't get NET 2 to install because it
keeps telling me that I have a beta installed. I had tried everything
but finally gave up. I just (30 minutes ago) ran the vstudio
autouninstall utility but it too gave up when it couldn't find a file
called "netfxsdk.msi".

XP pro will become a legacy system when I get everything over to
Vista. However I do have a lot of (Delphi) development stuff on it
which I will need to use.

If you have any ideas I would like to give it one last attempt to
finally get it up to scratch.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

You cannot install .NET 2.0 if you have .NET 2.0 Beta or .NET 2.0 installed.
I don't know about that VS2005 Beta.
To get rid of that .NET 2.0 Beta, try this.:
Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top beside
"Show updates". Browse down and look for .NET 2.0 Beta or just the .NET 2.0.
Select it and click Remove. Then try to update again.
