WinXP File Sharing PAINFULLY Slow

V

Victor

I'm trying to share files between a Win2000 and a WinXP computer and I'm
seeing the connection is PAINFULLY slow to the point of being useless.

It can take as long as 30 seconds to just show the contents of a folder that
has three files of less than 20K in size.

Both computers browse the internet quickly, no delays. In desperation I've
now got the two computers directly connected with an Ethernet crossover
cable - no difference.

I found this page:
http://www.ss64.com/nt/slow_browsing.html

and I added the registry entry and deleted the network shortcuts. Still,
it's slower than dialup (when it even works!)

HELP!

More info:
- Firewalls on both computers disabled
- It's slow, but I can browse files
- If I try to transfer files, I get the hourglass and then the message "the
specified network name is no longer available"

I see lots of people online with this problem, but no solutions. My best
guess is that this is some sort of network collision?
