WinXP doesn't see MS Basic Mouse in serial port

Hi,
I'm using Xindows XP SP2 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600
and I'm trying to get it to recognize an external
Microsoft Basic Mouse (Serial and PS/2 Compatible) by
connecting it to the serial port using an off-the-shelf
PS/2-to-serial mouse adapter.

The reason I want to do this is so that I can connect a
full-size PS/2 keyboard to the keyboard/mouse PS/2
connector.

I know that the mouse works because when I plug it
directly into the PS/2 connector and reboot, it is
recognized.

I've checked the serial port under Device manager and it
appears to be enabled.

What to do to get this darned mouse working?

You'll have to open your BIOS and enable the serial port there.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Corey.

What should I change in the BIOS? I already have the
serial port set to COM1(3F8H/IRQ4). Should I change it to
COM3?

Have you checked the laptop's BIOS to ensure that the serial port
is enabled?

Those adapters aren't universal, so it may never work with your mouse.
You're probably better off getting a ps2 splitter. They make them for
laptops for exactly your situation.

Thanks. I've done everything... checked that the port is
enabled in the BIOS and everything. I think I'm going to
take your advice.

Yes i've checked to make sure the port is active in the
BIOS. Thanks for the good tip, though. I think that I'm
going to return the adapter and get a splitter.

If I wasn't so darned cheap, I'd go out a buy a new USB
keyboard/mouse combo!
