WinXP clean install

I have a toshiba portegé 7140 laptop with external floppy and cd-rom and I
want to install xp from bottom since i just bought a bigger hd for it. The
cd drive is connected with a pcmcia card.

1) First I tried booting from cd, and the installation program starts up
fine, but crashes into blue screen after a short while.

2) I then tried formatting the disk on another computer, making partitions
in FAT32, copying installation files onto the harddrive, booting from
floppy, running I386\winnt.exe. This works fine until setup reboots the
machine, then it again says "Insert system disk in drive.." as if no
bootsector has been written to the disk. I can boot up with floppy again and
have a look at the temporary files that it put on c: but I can't seem to get
it back on track.

3) Tried with floppies, starting the win xp with 6 floppies downloaded from
microsofts site for people that have trouble booting from cd, but at the end
it says that it cant find the cd drive and I can press F3 to restart.

4) Having the temporary setup files in place on c: I again used the 6
floppies to enter recovery console and tried to run FIXBOOT c:, in hope that
it would boot and continue setup, which didn't happen.

I'm out of ideas, the last solution I can come up with is to take the old
drive with the installation of xp that is upgraded from 98 and putting it on
the new drive with norton ghost or something like that, but I really wanted
a new clean install.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for replying!

In fact I have already visited "Dr. D" for a boot disk, I didn't get it to
see the cdrom drive, but I didn't put so much effort in it as it would be
the equvalent of installing with the copied installation files already on
another partition on the drive. I reckon if I could somehow make the xp
setup from the 6 floppies see my cd-drive, that would be the best, and
otherwise to actually make it boot up after the first phase of setup has run
and copied the temp files.

right now i have
C:\ = empty FAT32
D:\ = FAT32 containing a copy of installation cd

I don't really see anything untried on the page.

Hi

Laptops may have a hidden partition installed by the PC supplier. May I
suggest that you contact your PC supplier to see if that is that case?

Hi

Not sure what the problem is then. See if there is a diagnostic program for
the hd on it's manufacturer's web site.
