After WinXP Pro is installed using one of the node (Line
15) in the LAN everything is working fine, can logged
into the Novell Server, can browse all the other Novell
Servers, can browse the internet and make all the updates
necessary, can see all the shared printers, shared
folders & files but when the computer uses anothers node
(any line except 15) nothing can be seen, cannot logged
into any network, cannot browse the internet as in
nothing at all.

I browse the Microsoft Knowledge Base but cannot find any
answers, Is there any help out there?

Many thanks to guys...

When you say "Line 15" perhaps you mean port 15 of the hub / router. Maybe
it's the uplink port and you have a cross over cable ?

i'm sorry for that, yes i mean port 15 of the hub, this
happens only on the XP computers including
notebook/laptop but computers running on Win98/98Se/Me i
can use any port of the hub with no problem

I know you said you can use any port with the other computers,
but I'm just double checking: can you use them on port 15 ?

Is port 15 the uplink port ?

The uplink port normally either contains an internal cross over,
or, has a switch to control whether it's a normal port or crossed
over (uplink port).

I'm just thinking that you may have a 'two wrongs making a
right' situation if you have a cross over cable and you are
connecting to a crossed over (uplink port).

hi dave, thanks for your reply but first give you brief
history or specs of our network.

1. 1 32 ports 10/100 fast ethernet switch (automatic)
2. 1 port internet sharer
3. 1 adsl modem
4. computers with various OS (XP, 98/98SE, ME, 3.11)
5. 4 laptop/notebook with XP and 98SE
6. 4 Novell servers

I use four (4) ports (6,8,12,15): port 6 for my desktop,
three ports (8,12,15) for new or old computers for new
install and maintenance. This problem only occurs on XP
but not the others. When I install the new XP computer to
the user using, let say port 22, it sees nothing (no
login, no internet, no shared printers/files), I mean
nothing at all but when I use the original port when I
installed XP it is like magic, everthing is there. Is
there anything to be done? Does XP save some kind of MAC
address in the registry? if so where in the registry the
MAC Address is located?

again, many thanks Dave

regards

Joe

AFAIK XP doesn't keep a record of the MAC to which it
expects to connect.

I can't think of anything else to suggest. Hopefully someone
else will read this and have an idea of what might be
causing the problem.

Dave.
