Winxp boot up problem

I have winxp giving and error saying the file
c:\windows\system32\config\system is corupt and it will not boot past. So I
was going to my other winxp pc to get that file to copy to the unbootable pc
to replace the damaged file. But win I try to copy that file, windows says
file cannot be copied because it is in use by another program which I know is
windows, I've tried booting with a dos disk but is tells me it cannot find
the path to this file so I can't do the dos copy cmd... Anyone know how I can
copy this file?
