WinXP boot loop

After installing windows updates; running malicious software removal
tool; and experiencing an unsuccessful load of sp2 my computer went
into a boot loop. Attempts at accessing 'safe mode' have failed. I can
only access the bios. The computer turns off and reboots at the
Windows flash screen. Any ideas how I can reload windows? (Without
tossing the hard drive) . I cannot boot from CD either.

Why cant you boot to cd,set BIOS for that (boot priority or similiar),install
xp cd,boot to xp cd,recovery,select 1 for C: Press enter for password,type:
Fixboot Then, CHKDSK C: /R When its thru type:EXIT Let xp start
If you really cant boot to cdrom, then power off pc (unplug),remove battery
for couple minutes, replace battery, power up pc.On start up,you'll need to
reset BIOS,date/time,etc, load optimal defaults, then reset BIOS for add
ons,etc,
save & exit...

I had a similar problem about 18 months ago when I had a system
crash while doing a repair install. F8 will not load safe mode,
and each time you try to boot from CD the Windows loader
recognises that you are in the middle of an install and tries to
continue the process. There's no way that I found to get out of
this loop: changing the BIOS achieves nothing. I ended
reformatting the drive on a spare system by connecting it as a
slave.
