WinXP and Pioneer DVR-AO3 problem

Please help - my Pioneer DVR-AO3 drive suddenly stopped getting along with
WinXP SP1, and I can't figure out how to solve the problem. Basically, I
can't read or write any CDs under WinXP, but I can boot from the drive and
I can access it if I use a Win98 boot disk.

When I boot my system into WinXP, I get the following message in my system
event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Cdrom
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

This happens during the boot process, with no disc in the drive. I get the
same error when I try to access a disc under WinXP, with the following
occasional companion messages:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Cdrom
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.

--- and... ---

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Cdrom
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7
Description:
The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.

The MS Knowledge Base said the problem is a bad cable, but there are a
couple of problems with this diagnosis. First, the cable is new. Second,
it had been working up until a couple of days ago (don't ask me what
changed, if anything - I have no smegging clue). Third, I was able to
upgrade the DVR-A03's firmware to the latest version (v2.00) without any
errors by booting from a Win98 boot disk and using Pioneer's DOS-based
utility.

I've also searched Google and Google Groups, to no avail. I've tried the
few things I could find on there, but nothing works. Here's what I've
tried so far:

* deleting the DVR-A03 drive in the device manager and letting WinXP
reinstall it
* deleting the secondary IDE channel and letting WinXP reinstall
* installing the latest IDE drivers for my motherboard (a Leadtek 7350KDA
with a SiS 735 chipset)
* making sure all of my burner software is removed and all traces of
drivers like the PxHelp20.sys stuff are gone from the drive and from the
registry

SiSoft Sandra detects the drive and reads its make/model under WinXP, but
it can't gather any other info on it.

Please - ANY help on this would be appreciated!!!

Tomoe,

Did the firmware upgrade coincide with the moment when things worked
and didn't work? The reason I ask is I somehow fried an NEC DVD ROM
drive a couple of months ago when updating the firmware (legal OEM
firmware, not a hacked version). Update from DOS boot disk ~seemed~
to proceed smoothly, but XP never again could properly access the
drive. It recognized it as a DVD drive, but XP always insisted there
was no media in the unit, regardless of what disc I inserted. Trying
to 're-update' the firmware led to all sorts of errors, so I figured
the drive was toast and replaced it.

No, the firmware upgrade happened well after things started going fubar. I
tried the upgrade to see if it would fix things. It didn't, but it also
didn't make things worse.
