scott

i was obviously unclear in my last post. My version of
word (office 2003) works just fine. The issue is in
opening word docs in other folders ie. with an icon.
When a word icon in another folder is clicked, the error
that appears says that winword.exe is need and is not
present. The same type of error does not occur, for
instance, with excel.
I have reinstalled office, and i'm guessing that the
problem is with windows (xp pro).
any help is greatly appreciated

Go to "folder Options" then to "file types"
Find your DOC icon and check on the "Open" settings.
Sounds like your file association instructions are corrupted.
