Winword error message

When closing a document after editing, I get: Winword has caused an
error in WINWORD.EXE. Winword will now close.

Have deleted normal.dot but with no improvement.

When Word crashes a rash of temp files is left behind, so you need to get
rid of those too http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
but the most likely issue is interacgtion with an errant Word add-in - maybe
a virus checker (Norton AV Office plug-in is notorious, and is switched off
from Norton). Check what Word is loading.
