winsrv BSOD

What's the best way to fix this error?

It bluescreens after it starts to boot, saying "winsrv cannot be found.

I don't mind doing clean installs, but is there another fix? The
recovery console is not on the drive, and can be obtained from the CD.

thanks.

I recently rolled out XP SP2 to our whole company. I did a gradual rollout
initially and never saw this issue. It only happened after everybody started
installing it. I don't see anything in common with the PCs that are getting
this BSOD. We don't have TVMedia installed anywhere and that seems to be
Microsoft's only known cause of this problem. I've been running Windows
repairs to fix it after the fact but I'd really like to find out what I can
do in advance to prevent this from ocurring. Any ideas? I still have a few
computers to update and they are mainly remote users. It would be very
inconvenient for them if their computer crashes because they have to send it
to us to fix it.

I am having this problem too and even after performing the boot level sp2
uninstall, I still get the winsrv BSOD. I have access to the computer using
UBCD4Win (ultimate boot cd for windows), but so far have not been able to
sort out this problem.

Anyone have an idea of what I can do next short of doing a clean reinstall?

I'm having the same issue.... no TVMedia installed, I have KB885523 approved
for installation via WSUS but our machines report back a status of Not
Needed so it won't install.... after we manually hit the workstation to
install the KB, the service pack installs successfully....but I can't get
this hotfix to auto-deploy......

I had the exact same issue with creating a bootable disk using
UBCD4WIN. I thought it was just my error in creating the bootable
disk. I tried several times and didn't get anywhere.
When I googled this problem, I saw that there was a potential for a
virus that was masking itself as an executable... winsrv.exe.

I did a scan of the registry and did find the following... but is this
correct or not?

Root : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key : SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems
