I am running windows 2000 on my machine and at startup I
get the error "winset.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created" If anyone knows why this
may be happening please let me know. I am not sure where
the error log is or what it is labeled by default, but if
that would help let me know and I will get that info.

Thanks in advance.

Hi TJ,

Winset is used to set environment variables. Look in your startup folders
or in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
To find winset.exe. The log that is being referenced is the Drwtsn32.log

Isn't that for Win9x/ME and not NT based OS's ?

Hi Dave,

Correct. I suspect that it was migrated during an upgrade.

your startup
folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run referenced is the
Drwtsn32.log

.
This is a fresh install of Win2kPro. The hard drive was
completely formatted.

This is a fresh install of Win2kPro. The hard drive was
fromatted as NTFS. Is it possible it was installed by an
application that was installed?

That would be odd because it is NOT a standard utility. It is buried on the Win9x/ME
CDROMs.

After you did a Plain Jane Install and before you got the error, what was installed ?

I installed office2k,Mcafee VirusScan 4.5.1, Adobe acrobat
5.0, FreeZip, Printkey, and then I installed a program
from APT called ACT Editorial. I can not remember if the
error showed up before or after the APT program but I
believe it was after.

TJ

It must have been ACT Editorial. The others would NOT do this.

Don't forget to update McAfee AV v4.5.1 to SP1 and update the ENGINE and DAT files.

Thanks for the info. This would not be the first problem
I have had with that software!
