WINS Problem

Hello All,

I have AN AD domain with Windows 2000 (domain a) and an NT4.0 domain (domain
b) (two different domains at two different locations). I have WINS installed
on one of my Windows 2000 machines and WINS running on one of my NT4.0
servers. Computers in domain A can brows and see computers in domain B, but
computers in Domain B can not brows or see computers in Domain A. The WINS
data base for Domain A has all the registrations, but the database in Domain
B does not have the registrations for the computers in Domain A. Both WINS
servers are configured as push / pull partners.

Can any assist in troubleshooting?

thanks
Randy

Do you have [1b] and [20] on both WINS? or compare the DC records in both WINS server. this link may help,

Troubleshooting Computer Browsing over WAN
Analysis and resolution: When each DC with WINS starts, it should register the [1b]
and [20] for the DC with its WINS server and the remote site WINS server ....

The first thing I'd do would be to check the event logs for any reported
problems.

Hi Robert,

In domain A I have 1b and 20 node types for domain B but I don't have those
node types in Domain B for domain A. I have also tried a manuall push and
pull. I also tried the net view \\computer name from both domains and that
works. The ports are not being blocked on the firewall. Thanks for the help.

you may want to use Browstat.exe or Browmon.exe to troubleshoot. Is the WINS server the multihomed servers? Any errors in the vent viewer?

Hi Robert,

I took a look at Browmon.exe and it identified who my master browser is. But
first let me lay out my network, I have broken into 3 segments, separated by
firewall and router. Domain A clients (PDC, BDC, WIN2000 AD), wins, firewall
| Domain B clients(PDC, BDC), wins | Router | Domain A & B clients, wins.

I ran browmon.exe from the BDC from Domain B (between the firewall and
router) and it identified a client on the right side of the router to be the
master browser. I looked in the Event Viewer on all my DC's, PDC's and BDC's
and there appears to be no WINS errors being indicated.

I guess my question is at this time is how does the master browser and wins
interact? I thought client would query the wins server for their information
if configured as it is in my network? If the master browser does not see the
other devices will that stop all my clients from seeing those to even though
wins is configured.

Thanks
Randy
