WINS giving incorrect IP of named computer on Lan

P

philip

Two of my computers using WINS are giving the wrong IP
address when pinged. I have to actually run ipconfig to
find the correct IP of the workstation. This is an issue
b/c i need to remote desktop into certain machines and if
i can not ping a machine by name i can not find the
correct IP address to use for remote desktop. Please
advise on how to correct this problem in SBS 2000.

Philip,

Based on your limited description I have the following recomendations:

1. Open WINS manager on your WINS server and delete the incorrect client
entries from the WINS database. The main reason that there are probably
incorrect entries for some of your computers may be because static entries
were created for them with an ipaddress that has changed. Static entries
will not get purged on their own so if this is the cause remove the
incorrect entries manually.

2. Make sure that your clients are all pointing to a valid WINS server. If
they are, you can check the WINS database and make sure that they have
registered the correct IP address in the database.

3. If you have multiple WINS servers, check all of them for both incorrect
and correct entries. Once the incorrect entries are gone and the correct
entries are in place, you should not have any further problems.

I hope this helps.
