YOU say.

Why is it not possible to browse the win-rar.com website? Why does the
following (see below) Tracert show "www.win-rar.com" & "win-rar.com" as having
2 seperate IP addresses?

--- resolving host "win-rar.com", please wait...

win-rar.com [207.44.140.16]

--- resolving host "www.win-rar.com", please wait...

www.win-rar.com [67.15.155.41]

Why does "win-rar.com" resolve, via Tracert, to "relay.rarmail.de? Are we
talking redirect here (nice looking text, but download-link somewhere else)?

Why is the download-link not hosted on the Rarlabs.com site?

Naive and trusting people (the type of folks who often end-up getting SCREWED)
have been falling for this "dual-site" thing for a long time.

I thought this might be a scam. Besides which that site has been showing
"too many connections" all day. That's why I used a ficticious name and
address and an email account that I never use and can kill quickly.

From http://www.rarlabs.com/misc.htm

"Since April 2002 it is win.rar GmbH's task to handle support, marketing
and sales related to WinRAR, rarlab.com and rarsoft.com. Click here for
detailed information about win.rar GmbH."

The 'Click here' link points to http://www.rarlabs.com/wgmbh.htm
The link to the left of the table points to win-rar.com

Sometimes it pays to read the actual site for an explanation before
diving in with the tracert/ping/nslookup... In the meantime, I'll be
enjoying my free copy of WinRAR ;)

It's fake, and most propabily virus, spyware or other malware.

You get fooled if you wanna get fooled...

You've been fooled. ;) After I submitted the info, the key came
from win.RAR GmbH (the official publisher for RARLAB products) and
works with with the WinRAR 3.51 I just downloaded from

Sorry..., I was to quick in my response.

But there where just to many things which made it look like fake, and
normally, 99.99% of such announcements are fake.

Such as the (I've said this elsewhere, also) download-link appearing on a site
similar to the WinRar name, but not quite. I would not have a problem with
www.rarlabs.com, but www.win-rar.com ?

That raises my hackles, and suspicions. Trusting people (such as I once was;
double-clicked on an exe-file I shouldn't have and ended-up offline for close
to a _month_) are the ones who end up with Diety-knows-what on their boxes when
running exe's of doubtful parentage.

You are a refreshing site to see, »Q«. Unlike with you, however, that site
raises my hackles, and suspicions. Trusting people (such as I once was;

Alright, then; but why should I ask for WinRAR, if I can get unRARing
with other programs, like 7zip or filzip?

<Duh>
Because WinRAR is the ONLY program that can *create* .RAR files.

ps. from the time I post this reply. *you* have less than 12 hours left in

True, one does not "need" WinRAR to extract RAR archives.
Including the above, there are may "unrar" utilities including
free command line UnRAR from RARLAB <http://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm>

One advantage that RAR has over other archiving formats is the
employment of "recovery record" redundancy which may allow one to
reconstruct damaged archives.

Since RAR is a proprietary algorithm one may only create RAR archives
with the products available from RARLAB.

Bottomline.. to unRAR you don't need it, to RAR you do.

First it was dead as a duck, then I could connect very very very
slowly but lost the connecton again during submitting the required
information. I tried again and again, could not connect. I've given
up. Either it's a lousy connection (on purpose?) or there are far too
many interested customers.

Quote from the main page, which I tried after two attempts that gave me
the "Action Canceled" message after 18%:

close the site for the remainder of the day...

I saw that message at about 11:00 pm (-5:00 GMT) yesterday: the 29th. Yet,
later (before midnight), although almost timing out, got through...
