Thanks, great find. I have been looking for something like that since my
archiver had problems with some strange rar files.

First you register, then you get e-mail with "activation link", when you
click on that you will reviece a second mail with key for a number of
programs that were apparently licenced by that magazine. in case of winrar,
though, you download the licence file instead, and copy it to Winrar
directory. And it works.

The program Peter pointed to is perfectly free and legal.
Rarlab(s)/Soft is giving away its' programs, now?

Hoping this was a legitimate freeware 'cover CD' version, I checked
Rarlab's site and quickly determined otherwise.

"Are old WinRAR/RAR versions freeware now?

No, it has always been our policy to provide users who have bought RAR
once with unlimited FREE UPGRADES!

This means all our registered users can enjoy all further versions of
RAR completely free.

Consequently no older versions of RAR will be offered as freeware."

About the comment that it is not possible to ugrade this to the latest
version;

"How can I upgrade my old WinRAR 1.xx - 2.50 license?

WinRAR and Rar for Linux versions 2.60 and above are registered with a
new, very secure, AV registration seal. The main advantage of this new
authenticity verification code is a significant increase in the strength
of the registration code and thus it's use as a means of identification of
the origin of a sealed archive.

Unfortunately this also means that the old registration key files will not
operate with the latest versions of Rar-Linux and WinRAR and thus all key
files must be changed. This is a cost-free process to the registered user.

....
Please note that your data will be checked against our users database, so
it is senseless to send fake keys produced by different "key generators"."

Does my Winrar registration entitle me to the occasional cruise on the
CEO's yacht?
