WinPE 2005 & PXE

I have booted WinPE 2005 from a simple (non-RIS) PXE Server, and the .ISO
image comes down fine and loads up. However, when PE starts, the Network
Interface does not start, and I cannot access the LAN.

I'm thinking that maybe the F12 PXE boot leaves the PC's NIC hardware in
3COM "UNDI" mode, and therefore, to be able to access this from PE, I should
include UNDI drivers in the WinPE boot image? - Would this be right?

Thanks, Peter Moreton

You will need to integrate the drivers for your NIC in the WinPE ISO. This
is covered in the winpe.chm file that is on the original WinPE media. As a
side note, I have had some trouble getting added drivers to load unless I
compiled WinPE with the /pnp switch when using mkimg.cmd

Hope this helps!

Glenn,

Doh! - of course. I had integrated the drivers for a different model of PC,
which work fine, but tried PXE booting on a model of PC that I hadn't used
until now. I expect it has different NIC hardware.

Thanks. PM.

How did you build the iso that cna be pxe booted?

PXE boot rom cannont be more than 32k, how did you load the iso(it should be
more then 50mb). Did you use the PXE server that comes with Embedded XP?

Thanks,

Vinod,

My setup PXE boot's a 180Mb PXE image which is in fact WinPE 2005. Takes
about 1 minute to load the ISO (mine is called customPE.ISO). The techniques
for creating a PXE / RAMDISK image are documented in the WinPE 2005 doc's.

I use TFTPD32 to provide PXE services (DHCP & TFTP)

Vinod, you should have PE 2005, but to be sure, look at the help file,
WINPE.CHM. This mentions WinPE2005 on the first page (if you have the latest
version!)

Thanks Peter. I have WinPE2004 and it does not have any documentation on this
subject. Can i accomplish this with WinPE 2004?

Where can i get WinPE2005? i downloaded WinPe2004 from Microsoft OEM website.

Thanks,

Vinod

Nope you need 2005 to ramboot iso files.

Contact MS and ask them how you should get 2005, it is available for OEM:s
and SA customers. It has been talk about it becoming a product of its own so
it might be poosible to buy it to but as I said - The easy way is to contact
MS

That's right, you need PE 2005, and have to build the PE image using Win2K3
Server SP1 to get the RAMDISK support.

Thanks for the time and help. I have to buy OEM version of Windows 2003
Server to get the OPK kit (this kit should ahve WinPE 2005). Is my
understanding correct?

Thanks,

Vinod
