WinPak

Before I go and roll out SP2 to my company, I installed it on my machine to
see what it would 'disable' and to get a taste of it. I find thru group
policies how to disable the firewall and security center, yadda yadda. All
looks good--we use hardware and software firewalls at the perimeter here, so
we don't need desktop level firewalling--it'll only hamper my admin efforts.

So, after disabling the firewall, I try to log into a door control system on
another computer --WinPak. I think it makes a connection to the computer,
but there's no way to really tell. Have a separate login for that software,
all's fine and dandy til this point. Enter my credentials, and it chugs for
half a second, then tells me "Database connection to 'machine name' failed."

I turned on the firewall logging, with the firewall disabled, and obviously,
it doesn't enter anything. I enable the firewall, find out what's being
blocked, then configure the firewall to open the ports it mentions.... 2394,
3453, 5555, 5556... and still no dice.

I'm pretty sure there's gotta be a logical explanation for the 'failed
connection' and that someone else out there HAS to be using WinPak (from
Northern Computers)... and hopefully they might have an answer they can
share. Northern Computers (owned by Honeywell) won't provide an answer to
this question, as they don't directly support the end user!... so I have to
find a dealer to get me an answer to a compatibility question. oy vey.

Any help, greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Ken

hiya , I don't use "winpak" but this may be related (and easy to test)

has to do with administrators rights on other machines.... will allow access
to a drive but not some folders...

try on one machine that won't work ..... goto drive properties (c: i'll
assume) click security tab , then advanced and check off the box at the
bottom of the page that mentions child rights.... NOTE: you must do this in
safe mode on XPHome

then try your program again on that computer...

Hey Haggis-

Unfortunately, I don't think that's the issue... I'm running in a domain
situation, and am a Domain Admin. Scary when us admins can't get a box to
do what it's supposed to.

A little more follow up info... others can connect to the database on the
computer that controls the doors (Win2000 and XP alike, so long as they're
not on SP2). My connection to that database stopped working when I put in
SP2. :(

Thanks anywho, but anyone have any other ideas?

Ken

Don't know if anyone has solved the problem yet...I just upgraded
software and have the same problem. Part of the problem may be with
active X controls. I also have a problem updating XP with proxy due to
the active X controls.
