WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM corrupt or missing

I am trying to boot my machine but it stops with the above
error message. Is there a way around this or will I have
to reinstall Windows 2000 and loose all the information I
have on the HD ?

Please help ?

Press F8 during the boot phase, then select "Last known
good configuration".

About your data files: They are safe, and there are various
ways to salvage them if necessary. On the other hand you
should consider this event as a wake-up call to review your
backup strategy. All important files must be saved to a
separate medium on a weekly basis. Next time you might
lose the lot - and there will be a next time!
