WINNT file opens at login

I have been working on this for a few days now with no luck. When I log in
my WINNT file folder opens on the desk top. I have looked through the
knowledge base and felt the problem was in the registry. I bought and
downloaded "Registry Mechanic" ran the software logged out and back in, still
the WINNT file folder shows up. My next step was to use MSCONFIG and do a
selective start up. I narrowed it down to the START UP tab. I could uncheck
the WINNT and this fixed the problem. So... Now I change MSCONFIG back to
normal Start Up - reboot and my friend is back. Opened MSCONFIG and found
that the check mark on WINNT is back. I of course un-checked WINNT, save and
exited to reboot. My friend WINNT is back again. So now I am booting in
selective start up (which will remember my un-checked WINNT setting). Is
there a way to save the settings in start up and still do a normal start up?
