Corrupted bootup configuration?

Hi all,

My XPH computer was running a bit slow so I went
to the sysinfo and looked in the startup programs list.
It finally came up with hundereds of entries that looked
like the following:

$winnt$ $winnt$.inf NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Startup
$winnt$ $winnt$.inf .DEFAULT
Startup
12520437 12520437.cpx NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Startup
12520437 12520437.cpx .DEFAULT
Startup
12520850 12520850.cpx NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Startup
12520850 12520850.cpx .DEFAULT
Startup
3rdBackupNow 3rdbackupnow.iss NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Startup
..
..
..

The computer has several different login accounts.
I don't know where to go to get rid of these
processes from the startup routine.

The second problem is that something has started
a prefetch routine and when I delete the prefetch
directory in the windows directory something
restores it after I reboot the machine. How do I
kill this from happening?

thanks for any pointers,
charles......

If I do your suggestion and say the prefetch directory/process
still returns, what do I do next?

thanks,

Why would you delete it? It's part of an XP feature - fast loading of often
used applications.

In this particulat machine it is a cures, it has messed up the boot routine
which used to be "clean".

Prefetch is a system process by design. If you delete the prefetch folder,
it will simply be recreated. This is a system function, not one you can
disable.
