Windows locks up after installation on first boot

Rob Gubler

I've recently purchased new hardware, and during the
installation process I chose to delete the partition that
Windows 2000 was previously installed on so it would be a
clean install.

Hardware:

Motherboard: Albatron, Intel PX865PE Pro
Processor: 2.6GHZ Pentium 4 with hyper threads
Video: Radeon 9600 XT AGP
RAM: 2 Corsair 400MHZ(PC3200) 512 Meg Chips (1 Gig
total)
Hard disk: Samsung 80 Gig

As expected, after Windows Setup completes copying the
files successfully, the setup program informs me it is
going to reboot the computer and that I should remove any
floppy disks.

When it reboots, Windows 2000 locks up almost immediately
after the BIOS completes execution. It will get as far as
the start-up screen where it displays the progress bar.
It seems to vary on how far it get at this point. I don't
get any error messages -- Windows just locks up and stops
responding (Control-Alt-Delete doesn't work).

I've tried booting it into "Safe Mode." Here's the output:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32
\mtoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32
\BOOTVID.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\system32
\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\system32
\c_1252.nls
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\system32
\c_437.nls
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\system32
\l_inil.nls
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\FONTS\vgaoem.fon

It will never get farther than this point. Sometimes it
won't even get this far. I've noticed that once it has
locked up the read/write led on my hard drive is lit up.

Any suggestions?

Rob

Yes, I did. This same problem occurs with Windows XP as
well as Windows 2000.

Except your question specifically stated Windows 2000.

This error cannot be pinpointed without trial and error; something in your
hardware setup is not compatible. I'd pull all the cards except the
graphics card as it won't boot without it, disconnect all peripherals that
may be attached except mouse and keyboard and try again. If you still have
the issue, if you have a previous graphics card, swap that with the current
one and see if you can then get XP to install.

I don't know what you mean be "Purchased new hardware." Was that some
hardware items? Which ones are new or are we talking motherboard, graphics
card, the entire PC, it's just too wide open. If you purchased a few
hardware items you added to a current setup and did a clean install of XP,
then try going back to a previous installation of some other OS you know
will work and install on this setup. Once at that OS's desktop, place the
XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check system
compatibility," the report it generates may give a clue as to the source of
the issue.
