Can you please let us know what Windows version you have. is it XP pro or XP
Home Edition/Media center?
Are you up2date with windows updates?
Why you felt the need to install a security software?

How many accounts on this machine?
What security suite/software was installed before mcafee?

Try system restore and see if that will solve the problem!
You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update

That's the next problem, can't boot to safe mode at all. Same error message,
the two dlls were not found. It's my son's PC and he is 3 hrs away, he
misunderstood where he was - thought he was in safe mode, but was not.
Can't boot to safe mode command prompt, last known good... or any other
options on that screen. All produce the same error. the DLLs are not found.
I guess the recovery console is the only choice here.

If you have any other suggestions, I'm looking!!!

THanks again

In reply to your questions, the PC is running XP Home. It's my son's PC and
he is 3 hrs away this week. He's been having trouble lately, thought he had
a virus. His current Virus Protection software is outdated. My office has a
McAfee site license for all employees and their home computers as well since
we have folks who work from home. I told him to uninstall whatever he has
running currently before installling McAfee. Not sure what he was running as
the PC is about 2 yrs old. He cannot boot into Safe Mode at all - in any
form. He thought he was there, but was mistaken which we discovered while we
were on the phone trying to work through this.

Of course, he doesn't have the XP disks with him...

Thanks for the info and links, I shall review them and when he gets back
home, we'll try the recommendations.
