WinExp: Tools, Map Network Drive does nothing

When I use Tools->Map Network Drive from one of my XP Pro machines
absolutely nothing happens -- there is no followup dialog box to get
information about the drive I want to mount. On the same machine "net use
...." does work to mount network drives. How can I restore the functionality
of Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer?

If you have the "Workstation" service running, check the Properties of your
'Local Area Network' icon, to be sure you have checked the "Client for
Microsoft Network" protocol.

Workstation service is running (automatic) and "Client for Microsoft
Networks" protocol is checked. Perhaps worth mentioning is the fact that
this machine has two NICs on two different subnets. However other machines
nearby are configured similarly and they do not have the Map Network Drive
problem. "Client for Microsoft Networks" is enabled for both NICs.
