My system has had Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME and XP installed on it. I have two
disk drives with Windows installed on the primary or C drive and most of the
applications on the secondary or D drive. I am constantly running low on the
C drive disk space and removing or deleting any more files and directories
seems a bit scary since I don't know what to keep or throw away. Plus,
Add/Remove Programs can't account for everything so I can successfully
remove things I no longer want around. I got hit with a virus some years ago
that infected the .inf files and I over-reacted and removed all of them.
What I would like to do is reformat the C drive and start from scratch with
WindowsXP there. Comments? Advice?

After backing up any data that you want to preserve, simply boot
from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to
delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation
process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the
PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then reinstall your applications and restore the backed up data.
