I have windowsXP Home sp2 on my PC. I have seen a few
postings that say the home version and pro are basically the same
except for so security and network additions. I think that the log
showing what chkdsk does is only available in pro version. I have
noticed several other responses that do not work on my home version.
Is there any place that has a "complete" list of the differences
between the home and pro versions?
email response not expected but to respond remove .uk at end
TIA

Wow a total list hmmm thats going to be hard to find I don't know of any.
This list however would be very long if you want every detail.

I remember hearing, back when I was still using Win 98, that XP Pro was more
of a business software, and that Home was more than adequate for most users.
If you are using it for business then Pro may be the way to go, but Home is
ok for one user or a small home network. I am sure there are those on here
that could give you more in depth reviews of the two.

See http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

If you see no need for any of these Pro only matters, save money and get
Home

Seems to me the biggest difference is that Pro will use HyperThreading (e.g.
P4 cpu "appears" to be two cpu's in system) where-as Home won't?

The WinXP Home and WinXP Pro versions are _identical_ when it
comes to performance, stability, and device driver and software
application compatibility, but are intended to meet different
functionality, networking, security, and ease-of-use needs, in
different environments. The most significant differences are that
WinXP Pro allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network connections
while WinXP Home only allows only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a
Microsoft domain while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports
file encryption and IIS. (Oh, and WinXP Pro usually costs roughly $100
USD more than WinXP Home.)

Nonsense, Home shows 2 CPU's in TaskManager on a HyperThreaded CPU, where
Pro shows 4 on Dual HyperThreaded CPU's.

Are you saying there's no advantage to upgrading to the Pro version?

Home does too. It is limited to one processor (chip) , but that can be
a hyperthreaded one and appear as two virtual CPUs

If I may express my humble opinion...Personally, I prefer XP Pro, more
robust and more versatile, especially in networking. I have tried the
Home edition and it was a disaster. Why settle for second best? I
think that the MS guys have done a good job with XP pro, even if it has
some quirks, it is to date the most stable OS MS has shipped in a long time

Just my 2 cents worth
