WindowsXP Freezes when a CD is inserted

Jason

Hello,

I have just installed WinXP on a new PC i've
constructed :-

P3.2Ghz Extreme Edition
nVidia 6800-Ultra 256mb
2Gb RAM
2 * Sony DRU700A Dual DVD Re-writers
etc.
Windows XP

When I insert a CD rom to either drive the System will
Freeze (But not everytime...) Obviously if Auto Insert
notification is off the problem goes away, as does
holding SHIFT.

How can I stop the computer from Freezing and return to
normal operations?

Kind Regards
Jason

Try removing the drive from Device Manager and reboot and see if that
helps. Also, double check the power and IDE cables as this sometimes
happens when the optical drive is not entirely connected.

Hello Nathan,

Yes, I've tried that. Booted into safe mode and remove
the devices from the manager and let it detect again.

Problem remains. Power cables are ok, double checked.

Kind regards
Jason

Can't really say much of anything other than disable AutoPlay and live
with it I guess, unless someone else knows something more. I would love
to hear a fix for this because it has happened to me before too. The
only way I got rid of it was formatting and reloading an image of XP
onto my computer.

Have you checked for firmware updates for each of the drives?

If so, try uninstalling one of the drives...and run with just one. If
it works fine that way, install the other again and see what happens.
If it freezes again, check for conflicts thru Device Manager.

Conflicts may NOT show up as warnings in dm...so go into each drives
settings and see how things look.

I'd also suggest relettering the drives to the end of the alphabet...R
& W.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

Trent

What do you call a smart blonde?
A golden retriever.

Hi my computer is a sony vaio, blah blah, the dvd rw freezes up the whole
computer. I put a cd in and it locks up. Nothing works. Then I reboot
sometimes it works. Sometimes it won't read the disk. Then it will lock up,
The guy from sony came out and put a new motherboard in. THat dont' work
either, the thing still locks up, sometimes it will read the cd or dvd other
times it won't. It doesn't matter if it is a data cd or a store bought cd it
still locks up. Only thing i can do is shut the puter down, reboot, and hope
it works.

Bye the way I am a blonde, ha ha and not a golden retriever.

You shoudl try to install the correct, and latest, chipset drivers for your
motherboard. This could help.

yes and yes, the memorex dvd rom is master, and the memorex cvc burner is
slave and configured so through the cables al well, and yes the motherboard
has been flashed. about 1 boot in 3 everything functions properly

I was not talking about "flashing" the motherboard BIOS. In order to access
the motherboard devices correctly, you need to install the chipset drivers.

Does this mean you have 3 optical drives connected ("2...dvd rom drives 1
burner...")? Or one DVD-ROM and one burner?

yves yes i have the 925X chipset drivers installed
and raymond
it is 2 drives total, one memorex 16x dvd-rom, and one memorex 16x dual
layer dvd burner, both are connected through the promise onboard IDE
controller card that my hard drives are connected to, becaus my motherboard
only has 1 IDE port

Is the Promise card BIOS and drivers updated to the latest versions?
www.promise.com

FYI - My WinXP Home SP2 failed to start when either an LG GCC4521B
(cdrw/dvdrom combo) or an LG GCE-8526B (cdrw) is connected to a Promise PCI
/ IDE card Ultra 100TX2. Both claimed driver conflicts. No know solution
from Promise on this one. I returned the drives and bought a GSA-4120B
DVDRW which worked fine on the Promise card. Go figure.

ill keep that in mind, the card was supplied by WD so i have the newest
drivers they have to offer. but my next corse of action was to switch to SATA
HDD's and run everything of the motherboard. if it still does it after that
then im gonna be about to flip out, cause i will be completely out of ideas
