Windowsupdate thinks the update rollup is needed when it is already installed.

I hard drive failed on a computer running W2k so I installed a new drive and
then W2k @ SP4. There is only a slow Internet connection so I installed the
Update rollup 1 (windows 2000-KB891861-x86-enu) from a copy I had on CD.
After that I ran Windowsupdate and it claimed 50 Mb of files were needed and
the Update rollup 1 was listed as one of them. Add/remove programs shows
that the rollup is installed. What is wrong that Windowsupdate thinks that
it is not yet unstalled?

Hi

We have same problem on several windows 2000 pro.

Wsus say needed on KB891861, if i go to update.microsoft.com computer needs
1 update ((KB891861).
Everything installs fine, but next time same thing, 1 update needed
(KB891861).
I have tried to manually d/l (KB891861) and install, everything looks ok but
next time at updates.ms KB891861 is still missing.

We have 100:s of 2000 machines and this problem is on 20-30 of them.
Any idea what´s wrong?

Hi Bjorn,

I have also the same problem with 8 Win2k SP4 from 26 Win2k SP4
computers. Although last night I was able to fix the problem, on one
computer so that KB891861 installs correctly and is showing up installed
in WSUS, Windows Update and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2.1.

The trick, was to remove every update which is listed in the Registry
path HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Updates\Windows 2000\SP5

Restart after having removed everything, I didn't restart after removing
each update YMMV.

Now, after restarting there will be problems with Winlogon, Explorer.exe
and Internet Explorer WILL STOP WORKING CORRECTLY.

Reapply SP4, Restart, Reapply IE 6.0 SP1 and Restart.

This fixed the problem with Winlogon, Explorer.exe and Internet
Explorer, stopped the wusauserv service removed the NextDectionTime from
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
and start the wusauserv. This started to reapply all missing patches again.

My general opinion is there is some conflict between having all these
patches & installing the Update Rollup.

good luck.

Hi.
Thanx, but this is way to much work, it will be faster to reinstall the
computers.

There must be some real problem with the patch i i hope that MS will release
some info or an updated patch..
